Sudstech Case

Studies

Exchange Quay (Salford Quays)

This large Sudstech installation was specified by Plan-it Architectural design consultants. Plan-it’s design called for an attractive and SUDS compliment porous surface. This was to cover approximately 2000m2 of pathways and communal areas featured in and around Exchange Quays central podium. The resulting installation offers a unique solution to urban drainage and completely eliminates the areas previous issues with standing water, trip and slip hazards.

Exchange Quay is one of the latest developments alongside The Lowry theatre and Media city to be included in the regeneration of Salford Quays. Previously the site of Manchester Docks, Salford Quays became one of the first and largest urban regeneration projects in the United Kingdom following the closure of the dockyards in 1982.

Gateway To Manchester (Manchester Oxford Road)

Manchester’s Oxford road is undergoing a large scale redevelopment throughout 2016.The proposals include over 4k of major bus priority lanes and Greater Manchester’s first ever ‘Dutch-style’ cycle lanes. This will see people on two wheels segregated from the traffic. The scheme has been revamped following a major public consultation with nearly 900 residents.

Sudstech have already provided approximately 1500m2 of sustainable porous paving in pedestrian areas. This aided congestion along the road from the 70’000 plus students that make the area their home every year. Due to the heavy amount of  foot traffic Manchester city council specified that the material needed to be extremely hard wearing, non slip and completely SUDS compliment. Due to the versatile nature of the Sudstech product, Manchester city council have also specified that the product be used for hundreds of innovative new tree pits included in the scheme.

The Beach (Lenzie Meadow Primary School)

Langford Direct Ltd were contacted by Lenzie Meadow Primary School who wanted to use their Sudstech permeable paving in the schools playground. Sudstech’s Scottish installers, Oakburn Gardens and Trees, blended several colours of stone to create a realistic beach effect for the children to enjoy. Sudstech’s patented two part poured system with a unique recycled tyre sub base, allows water to drain through the surface just like a real beach with no additional drainage required.

The school found this a perfect surface for their playground. It is very easy to maintain, extremely hardwearing and is permeable to in excess of 50,000 litres per m2 per hour.

Lee Valley Cycle Superhighway

Waltham Forest introduced the scheme to local businesses and residents back in February 2015. Their mission was to establish fully protected cycle lanes called ‘Segregated Cycle Tracks’ running both ways from the borough boundary with Hackney to Whipps Cross roundabout. Every year Waltham Forest holds their annual ‘Tour De Waltham Forest’ event which enables residents to ride through the borough on two wheels. This year the event took place on the new Sudstech segregated cycle tracks consisting of one yellow track and one red.

The Sudstech system, designed and developed by Langford Direct Ltd, offers a sustainable drainage solution that imitates the natural infiltration method of the water cycle. Sudstech is highly efficient and maintenance free with the ability to absorb up to 50,000 litres of water per m2 p/hr. Sudstech eliminates the need for additional drainage which is subject to frequent blockages and maintenance. Waltham Forest have already stated they have saved thousands on additional drainage.

The Magic Roundabout (Plough Roundabout)

For pedestrians, crossing the road is a particularly difficult challenge. Especially since the subway has been frequently submerged in up to six feet of water. This underpass has now recently been re-opened following resurfacing works using Sudstech permeable paving. The works, carried out by Hertfordshire County Council’s in-house contractors, Ringway, comprised the application of the porous material to cover the entire subway which will prevent all future flooding and water build up.

Naturally lying below the water table, the subway has previously relied on a water pump to clear the route of any excess water. This particular method has proved unsuccessful having broken down on several occasions. This was the reason for an alternative solution. Hertfordshire County Council specified Sudstech as a non-conventional and more effective method of draining all water through the paving system itself.

DLR Crossrail (Canary Wharf)

Sudstech have recently installed their system in the new DLR Crossrail station at Canary Wharf in central London. The surface is featured throughout the station’s iconic roof top park.

Due to the garden’s semi open air design and the high frequency of commuters trafficking the area each day the project called for a surface that was very low maintenance, extremely durable and about all safe; posing no trip or slip hazards.

As the Sudstech system is porous, water is now able to soak through the pathway. This leaves the surface dry for pedestrian foot traffic whilst also allowing rainwater to enter the surrounding environment and subsequently helping the plant life to thrive.

City West Housing Trust (Salford)

Sudstech has recently completed over 500 driveways for City West housing trust. City West needed to regenerate and update their housing stock and subsequently appointed Sudstech to resurface their properties. This included car parks, flat forecourts and driveways across three locations.

The requirement was to provide aesthetically pleasing and low maintenance driveways for their clients. These had to be environmentally friendly and fully SuDs compliant. Safety was a major consideration particularly for older residents and called for a pleasant, non-slip walking surface with no trip hazards.
